Big Ideas
At Hampton Primary School we strive for our students to demonstrate confidence, curiosity and critical thinking whilst having fun and enjoying their mathematics. Our curriculum sequentially develops deep understandings of the ‘big ideas’ in Mathematics, which are central to learning and connect numerous mathematical concepts into a coherent whole. These big ideas are:
- Number Sense
- Place Value
- Multiplicative Thinking
- Fractional Thinking
Through a combination of explicit teaching and problem solving scenarios, we set our students realistic, challenging and engaging problems that link to their world and develop the four necessary proficiencies in Mathematics:
- Fluency
- Understanding
- Problem Solving
- Reasoning
Our students develop the courage to take risks, show resilience and reason and justify their thinking. The Mathematical problem solving tasks designed by our teachers:
- Provide students with choice in the strategies they use, how they show their thinking and the level at which they access the task.
- Are accessible to all: Low floor, high ceiling with an appropriate level of challenge for all students.
- Require students to convince and reason/explain and justify their thinking to themselves and others.
- Require students to process multiple pieces of information and make connections between different concepts.
- Encourage students to be creative and curious.
